I think it probably makes a difference but I have no idea how to quantify what that difference might be. You also end up with a Wittgenstein problem when you try and do these analyses.
I tweeted once that the good thing about being a pessimist is that you're always prepared because you approach every situation asking yourself how things can go horribly wrong. I stand by that.
I think there's some truth to the premise behind this book, for sure. But you're right ... one way or another, any approach is as good as the next if it works for you. Whether they make a difference at all, though, I'm sure no one knows.
I have no idea about the book, but there are appears to be a book for everything. You are right, we'll never know. Unless we live parallel lives, in which case things could get exciting. Butterfly effect, I suppose.
Having the right attitude makes all the difference IMO. If you look at everything that happens to you with a defeatist attitude then what would be the point in going on? You know all about my life, how far would I get if I just let it get to me?
I believe in a growth mindset. Maybe the trick with negative thinking is to schedule it for a certain amount of time. Maybe that allows one to explore it without sinking into that quicksand. In other words, go there but just visit.
